How to Change The MetaTrader MT4 Default Color Scheme

I don’t know about you but one of the first things I noticed when I started to work with MetaTrader was the color scheme. I didn’t like it, it didn’t suit my taste and it was one of the first things I changed. I assume that you will want, like I did, to change the MT4 Default Color Scheme, we are going to see how here.

What Is The MT4 Default Color Scheme

The MT4 Default Color Scheme is the color configuration of candles and charts that comes with your Metatrader Client.

For example if you followed the article How to Install MetaTrader 4 Client Terminal.

In this case your color scheme is probably like the one in the picture below.

In the screenshot you can see how the color scheme is:

  • Black background
  • Green candles

Color Scheme VS Template In Metatrader

It is important to understand the difference between Color Scheme and Template.

In Metatrader the Template is the group of configuration applied to the chart.

So we can say that the Template includes:

  • Color Scheme
  • Indicators
  • Parameters of the indicators
  • Expert Advisors
  • Parameters of the expert Advisors
  • Candlestick style

So in other words you can see the Color Scheme as a subset of the Template.

You can see how to configure a Template in this article, however it is the same as the color scheme.

How To Change The Default Color Scheme

So as we mentioned before the Color Scheme is the color set applied to candles and background.

You can change the default color scheme that is applied when you open a new chart in MT4.

To change the colors you need to right click the chart and select properties.

Default Color Scheme

I prefer to work with colored candlestick on a white background so I usually start from a black on white

After that I then tweak the colors of the bars and wicks.

I then change the chart to candlestick, adjust the zoom and the following is the result.

Final Template

Remember that you can also add custom indicators if you want as we see in this article.

When you are happy with how the chart looks then you can right click the chart, select template and click “Save Template…”.

If you want the template to be the default one for every new chart you will open then name the template as Default and save.

In alternative you can save the template with another name and apply it ad-hoc.

Saving the default template

You have now created your custom template with color scheme and you will be very happy to see that even when you restart MetaTrader4 your color scheme will be maintained.

This is very useful also to match the charts with your trading strategy as the template includes the indicators and many strategies are based on a restricted number of indicators.

Saving the template will allow you to save time and have the chart ready for analysis.
